August Wilson’s Fences

Set in Pittsburgh in the 1950s, Fences depicts the life of Troy Maxson, a former Negro League baseball star who's now a sanitation worker. Troy once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes.
Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family through his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. But even as he takes responsibility for their safety and well-being, he betrays them each in ways that will forever alter their lives.
Part of August Wilson's celebrated Century Cycle, Fences explores the walls we build around ourselves and our loved ones, while also illuminating one family's journey during this pivotal time in our country.
Frequently humorous and always riveting, Fences is a not-to-be-missed Arts Center production, running January 31 through February 24.
