Tomorrow, our nation celebrates its 247th birthday. For many that means hitting the road to spend time with family and friends. AAA has predicted that over 50 million Americans traveled for this long weekend, surpassing the previous record of 49 million travelers in 2019.
Island visitors often comment on how friendly residents are, and that Southern hospitality is alive and well in the Lowcountry. Thanks to each of you who make our guests feel welcome as well as our workforce on the frontlines interacting with our visitors. Most of us were once visitors too before deciding to make our vacations permanent and moving to the area.
We work hard to educate our visitors to leave nothing behind but their footprints and respect our ecology and environment. The vast majority of our visitors are respectful of our island. July is the height of our visitor season, and it bears repeating that thanks to those visitors we enjoy fantastic restaurants, parks, and other amenities year-round. Our economy and quality of life are driven by visitors and we’re grateful they’re here.
When you encounter our visitors, say hello…say thanks for coming…ask them where they’re from and how they’re enjoying their time on the island. Their responses often remind us of how lucky we are to call this place home. Never take it for granted that we live in a place so beautiful that people come from thousands of miles away just to experience it.
If you’re planning to hit the beach this Fourth of July, look up. The annual Salute to the Shore flyover (click here for a schedule) will make you proud. Enjoy fireworks, family, and relaxation this Fourth of July holiday!
Sincerely,
Bill Miles,
President & CEO
