Leadership: Creating Leaders and Pillars of Our Community

Why do we take the time to invest in our members and their leadership capabilities? Because we look at business from a 30,000-foot view. We know that the leaders created and cultivated today will make a difference in our community in the coming years.

Leadership is a skill worth cultivating and your Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has been doing just that for over 30 years.

It’s always interesting to greet the incoming class each year and observe as their leadership skills begin to take shape. Not only are they learning about our community and leadership in an in-depth way, they are rolling up their sleeves and completing projects that will be part of the community long after graduation day.

This past year’s class was particularly challenged with their class project due to Hurricane Matthew. However, it gave them the opportunity to do something inherent to all great leaders…they adapted. They changed their leadership project midstream and decided to honor our first responders and give the community back something lost in the storm.

The 2016-2017 project, aptly named Matthew’s Oak, replaced a mature oak tree in Shelter Cove Community Park that was lost in the storm. Farmer Nelson Henderson noted that the true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit. Their class project reflects another hallmark of great leadership – vision.
