We’re proud of the island’s Gullah history and culture and we’re glad the world is taking notice.

Just in time for the 27th annual Gullah Celebration and Black History Month, our Gullah community is featured in the February issue of Travel + Leisure. The story was also syndicated with MSN, which reaches over 67 million digital readers each month. The three-page article dives into our very own Mitchelville, the island’s Gullah history, and details about native islander-owned businesses including the Binya Boutique, Gullah T’s N’ Tings, Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets, and more. How do articles like this happen? In many cases, your chamber is at work to make them happen. As part of our public relations efforts, we work each and every day to garner positive coverage for Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and Daufuskie Island. We work directly with editors and media to bring these articles to life, and we’re proud to help shine the spotlight on the Lowcountry’s history, arts, and culture. You might be surprised to know that there were over 2,700 stories and mentions about the Lowcountry in the media last year.

We hope you’re enjoying this month’s Gullah Celebration. Taste of Gullah — one of the signature events of the festival — is happening this weekend. Freedom Day was celebrated the past weekend at Mitchelville Freedom Park, and it was an incredible event. We’re fortunate to live in not only an area of phenomenal natural beauty but one with such a rich history and culture.

Make it a great week!

Sincerely,
Bill
