Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I don’t know if any of you remember this movie from quite a few years ago starring John Candy and Steve Martin. It told the story of a trip gone wrong and the extraordinary means, and various forms of transportation it took to get from point A to point B.
You can get to the Lowcountry by plane, train and automobile. Unlike the movie, we want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for people to get to Hilton Head Island which is why we’re fortunate to have not one, but two ways to arrive by air via the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport and the Hilton Head Island Airport.
Did you know that approximately 48% of those traveling into the Savannah/Hilton Head Island Airport are headed to the Island? Our on-island airport also plays an important role in getting visitors and residents from point A to point B. It brings more than just visitors to the Island, according to the preliminary analysis done by Talbert and Bright. It brings a total economic impact of $117 million dollars to our local economy. Commercial and private air service to the Island is important to our quality of life as residents as well as to our tourism industry.
Consultants Talbert and Bright recently held a public forum at the Hilton Head library designed to offer the results of their environmental study related to the airport and garner public input. If you didn’t have a chance to attend, you can click here to pass along your comments about the importance of air service to Hilton Head Island’s airport. I encourage you to take a moment to offer your feedback. As members of the business community, it’s important that your voice be part of the mix when it comes to important decisions about the airport and its future.
Many of us are taking vacations this summer and we all try to make the trip as safely and conveniently as possible. We want the same thing for those who choose Hilton Head Island for their vacation, business trip or a place to call home.
Have a great week.
